Code of Conduct for Mare Nostrum Public Workshops
Preamble
Mare Nostrum’s public workshops are spaces dedicated to musical creation, cultural exchange, and collective learning. To ensure these moments remain respectful, inclusive, and safe, we have established this Code of Conduct. It is based on the core values of respect, inclusion, and cultural openness, while incorporating practical rules to ensure discipline and safety.
By participating in our workshops, you commit to respecting this code and contributing to a creative, supportive, and harmonious environment.
1. Core Values
1.1 Inclusion and Non-Discrimination
Mare Nostrum strictly prohibits any racist, nationalist, sexist, homophobic, ableist, or discriminatory remarks or behavior in any form (verbal, gestural, written, etc.). We celebrate the diversity of participants and musical repertoires and are committed to providing a space where everyone feels welcome and valued, regardless of their origin, gender, sexual orientation, or physical ability.
1.2 Mutual Respect
Mutual respect is at the heart of our interactions. Every participant, whether an amateur, professional, or listener, must be treated with consideration. We encourage an attitude of openness, listening, and kindness, without judgment or mockery.
1.3 Cultural Openness
We value the diversity of musical styles and the backgrounds of participants. This cultural openness is essential to stimulate creativity and foster enriching exchanges. We encourage dialogue and discovery to build a shared space where differences are seen as a strength.
2. Rules for Discipline and Listening
2.1 Active Listening
Participants are required to practice active listening during interventions by musicians, facilitators, or other participants. This means maintaining silence and paying attention during speeches, avoiding unnecessary interruptions except for relevant questions asked at the appropriate time.
2.2 Respect for Instructions
Respect for the instructions given by the facilitator or moderator is mandatory. This includes following directions regarding exercises, speaking times, playing turns, and safety rules. Adhering to these instructions ensures smooth exchanges and the quality of the collective experience.
2.3 Use of Equipment
Participants must handle instruments and provided materials with care. Using another participant’s personal equipment requires prior permission. This rule aims to ensure respect for shared and personal property and to prevent damage.
2.4 Punctuality
Punctuality is essential to avoid disrupting the workshop’s flow. Participants are encouraged to arrive on time and to notify in case of delay or absence, especially for workshops requiring prior registration.
3. Behavior of Invited Musicians or Active Participants
3.1 Supportive Collaboration
Invited musicians or active participants are encouraged to adopt an attitude of supportive collaboration. This includes encouraging other participants, regardless of their technical level, and sharing constructive feedback without demeaning criticism.
3.2 Respect for Creative Space
Participants should avoid monopolizing speech or musical play to avoid limiting others’ participation. It is also important to adjust volume levels to avoid overpowering other musicians, unless otherwise instructed by the facilitator.
4. Participant Commitment
By registering for a Mare Nostrum workshop, you commit to respecting this code and contributing to a creative, supportive, and harmonious environment.
